Features and Benefits:
  • Practice planning with "intention, maximizing reps while maintaining quality, and creating drills with a skill/challenge balance."
  • Each drill is broken down to discuss its specific purpose, with modifications included to allow for easy customization for any skill level.
  • Learn drills to improve efficiency in both serve receive offense, and in transition.
  • Understand the "why" behind the skills and drills used by one of the most accomplished player/coaches in the country.

Using drills with intention to accomplish specific goals is a major thread in this video. Through nine dynamic, comprehensive drills, Clemson's Jackie Simpson Kirr demonstrates how to improve all three contacts to score in various areas of the game.

Whether using a number of successful reps, or timed drills, Simpson Kirr outlines why goal-driven drills and outcomes are important for every drill, at every level. She provides simple modifications to each drill for use with every age group and skill level.

Increase offensive efficiency on serve receive

The ability to score in serve receive is critical in volleyball. It prevents the opponent from going on runs, and keeps your offense running efficiently. In this video, Jackie Simpson Kirr breaks down several drills designed to improve your first-ball kills. Goal-driven to promote desired outcomes, whether it's tooling the block or hitting to a deep corner, this video provides several drills that coaches can use instantly to help in this important area of the game. Simpson Kirr uses a variety of modifications and entry methods to adjust the difficulty of each drill, balancing difficulty with focus and repeatability to get the most out of each rep.

Train to compete

Each drill in this video brings an element of competition! Whether it's against the clock or an opponent, players will learn a sense of urgency when completing these drills. One drill requires the passing team to score 8 perfect passes before the serving team records 2 aces. Another drill challenges two competing teams to achieve at least a .300 hitting percentage out of serve receive. Another modifies scoring to reward certain skills, such as +3 for a tip kill, while the opponent can pick up that tip attempt and score in transition for +5. Coaches will come away from this video with ways to execute skills while competing, adding context and dynamic situations to each drill.

The 'why' for each drill

The focus on first-ball kills and scoring in transition makes this video critical to two of the most important aspects of volleyball. Coach Simpson Kirr clearly articulates the expectations and desired outcomes of each drill, but also breaks down the "why"; knowing why each drill and skill is important increases player buy-in and connection to the drill. Her understanding - and ability to communicate that understanding - of why each part of each skill of each drill is beneficial to the athletes, and how it contributes to individual and team success, is what makes this video one that needs to be in every coach's collection!

This video is beyond demonstrating drills; it's teaching. Teaching athletes how to become efficient in their execution, and teaching coaches how to plan practices with intention, maximize reps to maintain quality, and modifying drills to maintain a good balance between challenging players while still making the focus of the drill manageable.

Customer Review: 5 out of 5 stars. "This video is beneficial for coaches of all levels looking to learn new drills, but also create effective, clear, goal-driven practices designed to increase scoring efficiency and increase player buy-in. One of the best I have ever seen!"
